MEL Workshop – “Reflections on the EU Rule of Law Mechanism and its future application in the Western Balkans accession countries”, Tirana, 13 March 2024
Session Date: March 13, 2024

The MEL workshop within “Let the Justice Rule the Region” action was held in Tirana on March 13, 2024 that delved into European best practices for the implementation of the EU Rule of Law Mechanism in the Western Balkans, with insights from both regional and Slovak experts. The panel was enriched by the presence of the Slovak expert, Peter Čuroš, who presented the EU Rule of Law Mechanism from Slovakia’s experience analysing its four pillars and challenging the “one size fits all” approach. Meanwhile, the second panel focused on the Western Balkans Growth Plan, as an initiative to have a shared vision of economic and political harmony for these countries. In these deliberations, concerns were voiced regarding the exclusion of civil society in the consultations of such a plan and the opacity surrounding the allocation of its funds. At the heart of the discussions, too, was the matter of ensuring that these funds, granted on the merit of progress, would truly serve to better the governance and stability of the region. Thus, the workshop became not merely a gathering of experts, but a call for the civil society actors to stand as watch dogs, ensuring that the promises of reform and prosperity were not left unfulfilled.
