Regional Expert Meeting, Belgrade, 11 April 2023
Session Date: April 12, 2024

The Regional Expert Meeting of “Let Justice Rule the Region” was held in Belgrade on April 11, 2023 and dealt with Chapters 23 and 24 of the EU integration process. The meeting further underlined the importance of cooperation between government and civil society as this frequently leads to sharp debates with often meaningful positions that make changes in the EU integration process. During the meeting, it was also emphasized the importance of shared regional experiences in addressing the challenges of judicial and governance reforms, and bringing democratic reforms closer to citizens.

Bojana Selaković, the coordinator of NKEU in Serbia, pointed out that the idea of the project is to put a greater focus on issues related to the rule of law in the area of Chapters 23 and 24.

Those topics are important in the process of European integration for all countries participating in the negotiation process”, said Selaković, adding that since its establishment, the NKEU has shown the greatest activity precisely in the areas concerning Chapters 23 and 24. She believes that regional cooperation of CSOs in this area is useful because the problems are similar, and experiences can help to avoid repeating mistakes and to make the process of European integration as efficient as possible. The Minister for European Integration of Serbia, Tanja Miščević, said today that civil society is a balance and a promoter in the process of European integration, in which they draw attention to new elements. The state, for its part, is trying to find what is realistically achievable. The understanding of what can be realistically achieved and the demands for reforms will be accompanied by a constant exchange of arguments between the National Convention and the state in the negotiation process,” said Tanja Miščević at the “Let Justice Rule the Region” gathering.
